ADC expels Nafiu Bala, others over crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expelled Nafiu Bala and several other members over allegations of anti-party activities, in a decision taken at its 8th National Convention held on Tuesday in Abuja.
The resolution followed the presentation of a disciplinary committee report during the convention, which stated that the affected members had been given time to reconsider their actions but failed to do so.
According to the report, the party formally moved and seconded a motion for their expulsion in line with its internal rules and constitution.
“Mr. Nafiu Bala, Odion Kennedy, Mrs. Stella Chukwuma, Johnny, Derek, and Elias have been given time to retrace their actions but have failed to do so,” the committee stated.
It added that the convention was therefore “respectfully invited to expel the above-named persons for anti-party activities.”
The party anchored its decision on Article 92 of its constitution, which empowers the National Convention to suspend or expel members and exercise disciplinary control over party organs, officers, and individuals.
ADC has recently been facing internal leadership tensions, with rival factions laying claim to control of the party structure.
One of the expelled members, Nafiu Bala, had earlier filed a court action seeking to restrain a faction led by David Mark from presenting itself as the party’s leadership.
The latest development adds to the ongoing struggle within the party over legitimacy and control of its national leadership.
