Fela, Sade enter Rock Hall of Fame

Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and Nigerian-British soul singer Sade Adu have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2026, in what is widely described as a historic breakthrough for Nigerian and African music on the global stage.
The announcement was made on April 13–14 during a special Rock & Roll Hall of Fame segment on American Idol, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, with 2022 inductee Lionel Richie revealing the list of honourees live on ABC and Disney+.
The selection process involved more than 1,200 musicians, historians, and industry professionals who voted across multiple genres including rock, soul, hip-hop, Latin, and Afrobeat.
Fela Kuti, who is widely regarded as the creator of Afrobeat, was honoured posthumously in the Early Influence category.
The category recognises artists whose work laid the foundation for modern musical genres and movements.
The Hall of Fame noted that Fela’s music, which blended West African rhythms with funk, jazz and highlife, also carried strong political messages that influenced generations of musicians and activists worldwide.
His induction comes shortly after he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier in 2026, further strengthening his legacy as one of Africa’s most influential cultural figures.
Sade Adu, lead singer of the band Sade, was inducted under the Performer category in recognition of her long-standing global impact and musical excellence.
Known for her distinct contralto voice and minimalist, jazz-influenced sound, Sade rose to international fame with hits such as Smooth Operator and The Sweetest Taboo.
Her music has influenced generations across soul, pop and R&B genres.
The joint recognition of Fela and Sade marks the first time artists of Nigerian descent have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a milestone widely viewed as a major moment for African cultural representation in global music history.
A total of 18 individuals and groups were honoured across four categories in the 2026 class.
Performer Category: Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division / New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan
Early Influence Award: Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons
Musical Excellence Award: Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, Rick Rubin
Ahmet Ertegun Award: Ed Sullivan
According to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, artists become eligible for induction 25 years after their first commercial recording.
The official induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. The event will later be broadcast on ABC and Disney+ in December.
