Imoke urges unity at ADC convention

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Convention Committee, Senator Liyel Imoke, has called on party leaders and members to remain united and resilient in the face of growing political pressures in the country.

Imoke made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja while welcoming party stakeholders, delegates, coalition partners, and other invited guests to the party’s 2026 national convention.

He described the gathering as a defining moment for the party, noting that it was more than a routine meeting but a convergence aimed at rebuilding and repositioning Nigeria.

According to him, the convergence of members was deliberate and driven by urgent national challenges, as well as a shared conviction that unity and clarity of purpose remain essential for progress.

He lamented what he described as rising insecurity, weakening rule of law, shrinking democratic space, and worsening cost of living in the country, calling for decisive action to address the challenges.

“These realities are difficult but also clarifying, compelling us to define precisely the kind of country we want to build for present and future generations,” he said.

Imoke noted that preparations for the convention were not without difficulties, including legal disputes and reported attempts to restrict access to venues designated for the event.

“Even as recently as last night, there were efforts to pressure the venue owners to cancel our reservation but despite everything, we are here,” he stated.

He commended party members for their resilience, saying their ability to overcome obstacles demonstrated deep commitment to the party’s ideals and broader national transformation.

The former Cross River State governor also praised members who contributed personal resources toward ensuring the successful conduct of the convention, describing their sacrifice as uncommon in Nigeria’s political space.

“This spirit is instructive and speaks to what we are becoming as a party committed to genuine change and national renewal,” he added.

Imoke expressed confidence that the challenges faced by the party had further strengthened internal unity and reinforced its belief that the ADC represents a credible platform for national rebirth.

He urged delegates to engage constructively, make informed decisions, and act in the interest of Nigerians who expect meaningful leadership and reform.

The convention was attended by several high-profile political figures, including foreign envoys from China, Britain, and Norway.

Others present included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former governors Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Senator Dino Melaye.

Also in attendance were former ADC National Chairman Raph Nwosu, former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, among others.
