Court adjourns trial of driver in Anthony Joshua crash to June

The Ogun Magistrate’s Court 1 sitting in Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of the driver involved in the road crash linked to former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua to June 2, 2026.

The case, presided over by Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun, was adjourned on Tuesday, marking the third time the matter has been postponed to allow the prosecution file a fresh charge to the existing information before the court.

The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji, is facing a four-count charge bordering on allegations of dangerous and reckless driving causing death.

He is also accused of reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, as well as operating without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to relevant sections of the Federal Highway Act.

During proceedings, the prosecution counsel, G. O. Ogunyomi, requested an adjournment, which was granted by the court.

The defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, did not object to the request.

Magistrate Somefun subsequently fixed June 2, 2026, for proper hearing of the case.

The incident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, involving a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck.

The crash led to the deaths of Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, while the driver and Joshua reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Joshua was later discharged from hospital after being declared fit to continue recovery at home.

The deaths of Ghami and Ayodele drew widespread reactions across the international boxing community, where both men were described as key members of Joshua’s training team.

Their remains were later repatriated to the United Kingdom, where a funeral service was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
