Lagos unveils 10-day burial programme for Akran

The Lagos State Government has announced a 10-day funeral programme for the late Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Toyi I, with ceremonies scheduled to run from April 23 to May 6, 2026.
The announcement was made on Saturday in Badagry by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who also chairs the Central Planning Committee for the late monarch’s burial rites.
She said the state government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is committed to giving the traditional ruler a befitting farewell, adding that the planning process was carefully aligned with cultural expectations and state activities.
“The Lagos State Government, under Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is committed to honouring the Akran befittingly,” she said, noting that the timing of the announcement was deliberate to ensure proper coordination of traditional rites.
According to her, the programme will begin on April 23 with gun salutes, traditional prayers (Iwure), and Ajogan cultural parades across the eight quarters of Badagry.
She explained that subsequent days would feature a wide range of events, including a novelty football match on April 24 at Badagry Grammar School, followed by community service activities, medical outreach, and environmental sanitation on April 25.
Between April 26 and April 28, various associations, trade groups, and community stakeholders are expected to pay homage at the Akran’s palace, reflecting widespread participation in the mourning period.
On April 29, key activities will include inspection of ongoing project sites such as the Badagry Central Palace and Menu-Toyi Square, alongside a procession organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria.
The programme continues on April 30 with youth-focused events, including Fitila night processions and a night of tribute at the palace.
Religious observances will also feature prominently, with a Jumat service scheduled for May 1 at the Central Mosque and an interdenominational service on May 2 at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral.
A foundation-laying ceremony for Aholu Menu-Toyi I Park, along with a grand reception, is also billed for May 2 at Badagry Grammar School.
On May 3, a thanksgiving service will hold, while the final day of the rites on May 6 will feature Zangbeto performances, Hungan drumming, and Oro traditional ceremonies across Badagry.
Mrs Salu-Hundeyin said the activities reflect the cultural depth and leadership legacy of the late monarch, urging residents to actively participate and observe the scheduled events respectfully.
A lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency I, Bonu Solomon, described the planned Akran Legacy Festival as a key highlight, noting that it would also stimulate local economic activity.
He said the festival would serve as a platform to celebrate the monarch’s contributions, particularly his efforts in youth development and community growth.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee, Adeyinka Amosu, said the state-led arrangement had helped resolve uncertainty surrounding the burial and renewed attention to development in the Badagry area.
Traditional rulers, chiefs, and members of the planning committee were present at the briefing.
