Ghana summons South African envoy over xenophobic attacks on nationals

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner in Accra following recent reports of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry confirmed that Acting High Commissioner Mr Thando Dalamba was invited by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to address concerns over viral videos showing incidents of intimidation and harassment.

The ministry said the summons was intended to “formally express strong concern regarding reported acts of intimidation and harassment against foreign nationals, including Ghanaians as captured in widely circulated viral videos.”

It referenced an incident in KwaZulu-Natal Province where a Ghanaian national was allegedly confronted, asked to prove his legal status, and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.”

The minister described such conduct as unacceptable, saying it “undermines the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.”

According to the statement, recent reports also indicate rising tensions in some areas, with foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, reportedly advised to remain indoors for safety.

While no deaths or injuries have been recorded in the latest incidents, the ministry warned that similar past episodes had previously resulted in loss of lives and property, stressing the need to prevent any escalation.

Ablakwa reaffirmed the historical ties between Ghana and South Africa, recalling Ghana’s support for the anti-apartheid struggle and the role of Dr Kwame Nkrumah in advancing African liberation movements.

He stressed that “unprovoked harassment and attacks on law-abiding individuals are contrary to the principles of African solidarity and unity,” adding that Africans must avoid actions that threaten peaceful coexistence.

The government confirmed it has lodged a formal protest and called for “immediate and effective measures to ensure the protection and safety of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa,” as well as firm assurances that such incidents will not recur.

In response, the Acting High Commissioner acknowledged the concerns and stated that the South African government is treating the matter seriously.

He said government was monitoring the situation closely and taking steps to restore calm, while working to ensure those involved are held accountable.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Ghana’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, stating that it will continue to engage relevant authorities to guarantee their safety and security.
