Renaissance Africa unveils 6 projects in Rivers oil spill communities

Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has commissioned six community development projects in oil spill-affected communities in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, as part of efforts to support environmental recovery and improve local living conditions.
The projects included a 12-classroom block in Agbonchia, a 200-capacity town hall in Akpajo, and upgrades to ICT facilities, backup power supply, and renovation works at Community Secondary School, Aleto.
Other interventions include the desilting of a four-kilometre drainage channel in Aleto, as well as electricity upgrades and the installation of prepaid meters in Aleto and Okerewa communities.
Speaking during the inauguration in Agbonchia on Friday, the Vice President for Relations and Sustainable Development at Renaissance Africa, Dr. Igo Weli, said the projects were designed based on consultations with host communities following the June 11, 2023 oil spill on the Nkpoku-Bomu pipeline, formerly operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company.
He said the company adopted a collaborative approach after taking over operations, which led to pipeline repairs, crude oil recovery, and the commencement of clean-up activities in affected areas.
According to him, the initiatives reflect a broader commitment to environmental remediation and sustainable development.
Weli explained that Renaissance Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Aleto community in August 2024 to fund development projects as part of a goodwill arrangement.
He added that while some of the agreed projects have been completed, others, including electrification efforts, are still ongoing.
He commended the cooperation of host communities, government, and stakeholders, saying it aligned with federal efforts to encourage local participation in the energy sector and promote sustainable resource management.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, represented at the event by Mr. Charles Barawi, described the projects as impactful and beneficial to students and future generations, pledging continued government support for partnerships that expand access to education.
The Chairman of Eleme Local Government Council, Chief Obarilomate Illor, also praised Renaissance Africa for its contributions to community development, noting that the projects would improve living standards and strengthen socio-economic growth in the area.
Similarly, the Paramount Ruler of Eleme, King Philip Obele, said the initiatives marked a positive shift in relations with host communities, while urging the company to extend support to potable water projects and calling on residents to protect the facilities for long-term benefit.
