Labour Party picks Nenadi Usman as chairman

The Labour Party on Tuesday elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman during its national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State, marking a major leadership reshuffle within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The convention also produced a new National Working Committee (NWC), which was immediately inaugurated after the exercise.
The newly elected executive members include Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Mrs. Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary, Comrade Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader, among others.
Party officials confirmed that the new leadership has already assumed duty following their swearing-in ceremony at the convention.
Senator Usman, a former Minister of Finance and one-time senator, had been serving as head of the party’s caretaker leadership structure following internal restructuring efforts initiated in 2024.
Her position had earlier received backing from electoral and judicial authorities after legal disputes over the party’s leadership were resolved in her favour through court rulings affirmed by the Court of Appeal earlier in 2026.
In her acceptance remarks, Usman thanked party members for entrusting her with the leadership of the party and pledged to focus on reconciliation, unity, and rebuilding internal structures.
She said the priority of her administration would be to strengthen cohesion within the party and prepare it for stronger performance in future elections.
She also expressed appreciation to Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his support and leadership role within the party structure.
Governor Otti, speaking at the convention, urged the new leadership to provide clear direction and strengthen the party’s grassroots organisation across the country.
He encouraged the NWC to consolidate gains made by the party and ensure it remains competitive in the political space ahead of 2027.
The leadership change comes at a time when the Labour Party is seeking to stabilise its internal structures amid shifting political alliances and preparations for the next general elections.
Political analysts said the new leadership would play a crucial role in defining the party’s strategy and unity as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
