Makinde hosts Obi, South-East leaders for 2027 talks

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo on Tuesday hosted former Labour Party presidential candidate and African Democratic Congress (ADC) aspirant, Peter Obi, alongside prominent South-East political leaders in a closed-door meeting at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan.

The meeting, which lasted several hours, is part of widening political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political actors intensify engagements across regions and party lines.

Obi was accompanied by a high-powered delegation that included former Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu; former Governor of Enugu State, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo; former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Achike Udenwa; Senator Ben Obi; Dr Oseloka Obaze; and Chief Onyema Ugochukwu.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Obi said the engagement was part of broader consultations on a proposed coalition ahead of 2027, as well as discussions on national unity and governance reforms.

He explained that the consultations were aimed at building consensus on the future direction of Nigeria’s leadership and development.

“We have come to respectfully consult my dear brother, His Excellency, the Governor of Oyo State, on the coalition for the 2027 election and the overall well-being of Nigeria,” Obi said.

He added that the discussions focused on building a country where opportunities are not limited by background or connections.

“It is about building a Nigeria where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.

Obi also stated that the consultations also addressed economic restructuring, particularly the need to shift Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven one.

He expressed optimism that ongoing political engagements across the country would eventually produce a more united, secure, and progressive nation.

“Nigerians should expect a better Nigeria, a more united, secure, and progressive country, where we move from consumption to production and create jobs for our people,” he added.

Governor Makinde, who is increasingly seen as a key political figure in opposition realignments, is believed to be holding consultations with various political blocs ahead of 2027.

Although details of his remarks were not disclosed, sources described the discussions as strategic and focused on Nigeria’s political future and governance direction.

The meeting adds to a growing wave of political consultations across the country as stakeholders explore possible alliances ahead of the next general elections.
