IGP orders dismissal over Delta killing

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Nuhu Usman, over the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision was announced on Tuesday during an emergency press conference in Abuja, following a review of the incident by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).
According to the police chief, the officer, alongside members of his team, was found culpable and recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force after investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The panel determined that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
Based on the findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers involved.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP stated.
Disu confirmed that he has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Reiterating the Force’s position, the IGP stressed that the Nigeria Police maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial killings and abuse of power.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.
”Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, acknowledging the pain caused by the incident and assuring that justice would be pursued.
The IGP added that the Force remained committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a way that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability.
He also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that the police would continue to uphold professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The killing of 28-year-old Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has sparked widespread outrage, particularly after a video of the incident circulated online.
Police authorities said the incident happened when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to transport a parcel containing a pistol and ammunition.
