King Charles honours U.S. fallen heros

King Charles III paid tribute to fallen American soldiers on Thursday, marking the final day of his state visit to the United States, a trip aimed at strengthening ties between both nations amid recent geopolitical tensions.

The British monarch, accompanied by Queen Camilla, visited Arlington National Cemetery, where they laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honour of unidentified American war casualties.

The royal couple stood in silence as a bugler played “Taps,” before proceeding to view exhibits and historical artifacts at the site, underscoring the solemnity of the occasion.

The visit concluded a four-day diplomatic tour widely regarded as successful, with Donald Trump hosting the monarch with ceremonial splendour, including a formal welcome and a state banquet at the White House.

“He’s a great king, the greatest king, in my book,” Trump told reporters during a brief farewell ceremony held under clear spring skies.

‘:As the royal entourage departed, he added: “Great people. We need more people like that in our country.”

Earlier in the week, King Charles delivered a historic address to the U.S. Congress, the first by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.

The speech touched on a range of issues, including climate change, the importance of NATO, and continued support for Ukraine, themes that resonated despite political sensitivities.

The monarch also sought to downplay tensions between Washington and London, particularly over the United Kingdom’s decision not to participate in the war in Iran.

He noted that the long-standing alliance between the two nations remains resilient despite differences.

Beyond official engagements, the royal visit featured lighter moments and cultural stops.

In New York, the couple paid respects at the September 11 memorial and met with city officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

King Charles also toured an urban farming initiative in Harlem, reflecting his longstanding interest in environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla attended a commemorative event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh at the New York Public Library.

The visit took place under heightened security following a recent alleged assassination attempt targeting President Trump at a media event in Washington.

The royal couple is expected to depart for Bermuda as the next stop on their international itinerary, bringing the U.S. leg of the visit to a close.
