UBA denies Elumelu divorce rumours, threatens legal action

United Bank for Africa (UBA) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, has divorced his wife, describing the claims as false, malicious, and damaging.

In a statement, signed by Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, UBA, Lagos.

the bank said it became aware of what it called “a false, defamatory, and malicious publication” and moved quickly to debunk it.

“These statements and all similar content are entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis.

“The claims are a deliberate falsehood designed to mislead the public and cause reputational harm, ” UBA said.

UBA added that the matter had already been escalated to law enforcement authorities, confirming that arrests have been made in connection with the publication.

According to the bank, those arrested include Mr Kingsley Akunemeihe (@Directorkem), Mr Chigozie Success Ihebom, and Mr John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).

It said the suspects were being investigated over their alleged roles in spreading the claims.

“The matter has been referred to the relevant law enforcement authorities, who have commenced action,” the statement noted.

The bank also warned that investigations remain ongoing and could result in additional arrests and prosecutions.

“Investigations are ongoing and are expected to lead to further arrests and prosecutions of all persons involved in originating, amplifying, or sustaining this defamatory campaign,” it said.

UBA also issued a strong warning to individuals and platforms sharing the allegation, demanding an immediate stop to further circulation of the content.

“This serves as a formal notice to all individuals, platforms, and entities involved in the publication, reposting, or continued dissemination of this content to immediately cease and desist,” it stated.

The bank demanded the removal of the material and urged those involved to preserve all related records, warning of possible legal consequences for non-compliance.

“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, damages, and any other remedies available under applicable law,” the statement added.

UBA reiterated its resolve to defend its reputation and that of its chairman, stating that all legal avenues would be pursued.

“The UBA Group is resolute in protecting the reputation, privacy, and integrity of our brand, that of Mr. Elumelu and will pursue all necessary legal avenues, civil and criminal to ensure that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable,” it said.
