Bomadi/Patani faces defection wave as Mutu faces pressure

Tension is rising in the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency of Delta State amid growing warnings of a possible large-scale political defection that could reshape the area’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. John Feh, has cautioned that dissatisfaction among party members and constituents has reached a critical level.

According to him, unless urgent steps are taken by the state government and key stakeholders, many political actors may abandon the ruling structure for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement released on Tuesday, Feh described the situation as more than routine political disagreement, warning that it signals deep-rooted frustration within the constituency.

He stressed that the looming defection could significantly alter political alignments if not promptly addressed.

At the center of the crisis is the long-standing tenure of the incumbent lawmaker, Nicholas Mutu, who has represented the constituency for nearly three decades.

Feh emphasised that the dissatisfaction is widespread and coordinated, rather than isolated.

He warned that a mass defection would not only weaken existing party structures but could also destabilize the broader political environment in the constituency and beyond.

“The situation demands immediate and strategic intervention,” the statement noted, urging the Delta State government and political leaders to restore trust through transparent and inclusive processes.

”Engagement with aggrieved stakeholders and a commitment to fairness, he added, are essential to reversing the growing discontent.

Critics argued that his extended stay in office has not translated into meaningful legislative achievements or visible development for the people.

Concerns have also been raised about what many describe as a lack of accessibility and engagement with constituents.

Observers noted that effective representation requires consistent interaction with the electorate, as well as tangible contributions through bills, motions, and constituency projects areas where the lawmaker is alleged to have underperformed.

Adding to the tension is the perception that political patronage, rather than merit or democratic competition, has sustained Mutu’s continued hold on the seat.

This belief, according to stakeholders, has weakened confidence in the internal processes of candidate selection and fueled calls for change.

Political analysts said the unfolding developments in Bomadi/Patani could serve as a test case for party cohesion and internal democracy in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

For now, all eyes remain on how authorities and party leadership will respond to the mounting pressure.

As the warning signals grow louder, the choice facing stakeholders appears increasingly stark: address the grievances now or risk a political realignment with far-reaching consequences.
