Police probe fatal shooting near University of Benin

The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Sunday around the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis in Benin City.
Police confirmed that the incident happened at about 5:00 p.m. near the university’s main gate in Ugbowo.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, preliminary findings show that three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK were attacked while leaving the university campus.
The victims were identified as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu.
The statement said the victims’ vehicle was intercepted by another white Mercedes-Benz GLK, from which the attackers allegedly opened fire after lowering their windows.
“The occupants of the suspect vehicle reportedly lowered their windows and opened fire on the victims before fleeing to an unknown destination,” the police said.
The attack left the three occupants with varying degrees of gunshot injuries. A female passerby, Dorathy Ubah, was also reportedly hit during the shooting.
Police operatives were quickly deployed to the scene following a distress call and evacuated the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment.
However, one of the victims, Alexander Omogiate, was confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty, while the others are receiving treatment.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at tracking down the fleeing suspects and ensuring they are brought to justice.
The command warned criminal elements operating around university communities and other parts of the state to desist from violent crimes.
It also assured residents that it remains committed to maintaining law and order across Edo State.
“No stone will be left unturned in ensuring those responsible for this heinous act are apprehended and prosecuted,” the police said.
Members of the public have been urged to provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations, with assurances that all tips will be treated confidentially.
Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, condemned the attack, describing it as a “cold-blooded killing” and a serious threat to public safety.
He extended condolences to the family and associates of the deceased and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling violence and cult-related activities in the state.
