Yesufu defends party choice after Sowore’s criticism

Activist and political commentator, Aisha Yesufu, has defended her decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of her planned bid for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

This is coming after former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore questioned her choice of political platform.

Yesufu responded after Sowore, during an interview on Channels Television, expressed support for her political ambition but suggested she had chosen the wrong party.

Reacting to his comments, she insisted her decision was deliberate and within her political rights.

“I’m not in the wrong party. Maybe he should market his party more (Sowore’s African Action Congress, AAC), not to be like a one-person party, so we’ll come and join,” she said.

Sowore had earlier said he supported Yesufu’s decision to enter politics, stressing that activists should actively participate in governance.

“No, I totally support her. I’ve always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things, should get into politics,” he said.

He added that political engagement remained a key form of activism capable of driving societal change.

“The business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society,” Sowore said.

However, he maintained that she would have been better aligned with his party, the African Action Congress (AAC), while still wishing her success in her ambition.

“So I totally support her, and I hope she wins. Even though I think that she’s in the wrong party, she should have joined our party,” he added.

Yesufu recently exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat in 2027.
