Ghana MP detained st Amsterdam Airport

Ghanaian Member of Parliament Kwame Ohene Frimpong has been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam by Dutch authorities, according to an official statement from Ghana’s Parliament.

Frimpong, who represents the Asante Akyem North constituency, was reportedly held in connection with an ongoing international investigation said to involve the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Preliminary reports indicated that the probe has been ongoing for more than a year and spans multiple jurisdictions, with law enforcement agencies across different countries cooperating on the case.

Sources familiar with the investigation allege that it centres on suspected financial crimes, including money laundering and romance scam-related activities, with an estimated value of about $32 million.

However, these allegations have not been independently confirmed by either Dutch or U.S. authorities.

In a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror, Ghana’s legislature confirmed it had been informed of the detention and was engaging relevant diplomatic channels to obtain further details.

The statement noted that parliamentary leadership, including the Speaker, is in contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Parliament is also seeking information on whether formal charges have been filed against the lawmaker, as well as the purpose of his travel to the Netherlands.

At the time of reporting, authorities had not disclosed whether Frimpong was travelling on official parliamentary duty or for private reasons.

The development has triggered widespread attention in Ghana, with growing public calls for transparency from both Dutch authorities and Ghanaian officials as investigations continue.
