Semenyo fires Manchester City to FA Cup glory

Antoine Semenyo delivered a moment of brilliance as Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.
The Ghanaian winger scored the decisive goal in the second half with a stunning back-heel finish that sealed City’s eighth FA Cup title and handed manager Pep Guardiola another major trophy.
Semenyo’s spectacular effort came after a tense and scrappy encounter between two sides that struggled to create clear-cut chances for long periods.
The 26-year-old latched onto a low cross from Erling Haaland before cleverly flicking the ball into the far corner with an audacious back-heel finish that left Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez helpless.
The goal proved enough to secure victory for City and ended the club’s recent frustrations in the competition after back-to-back FA Cup final defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
The triumph marked Guardiola’s third FA Cup success with Manchester City, having previously won the competition in 2019 and 2023.
It also brought the Spaniard’s trophy haul at the club to 20 titles during his decade-long reign.
City’s latest silverware followed their League Cup triumph over Arsenal earlier in the season and extended their unbeaten domestic run to 21 matches.
Ironically, Semenyo, who joined Manchester City from Bournemouth during the January transfer window, was born close to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home in west London.
His match-winning strike immediately earned comparisons with some of the most memorable FA Cup final goals scored by legends such as Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Roberto Di Matteo.
Manchester City controlled possession for much of the first half, but Chelsea’s disciplined five-man defensive setup frustrated Guardiola’s men for long stretches.
Haaland came close to opening the scoring after capitalising on a loose ball near the Chelsea penalty area, but his effort drifted wide from a tight angle.
The Norwegian striker threatened again before halftime when he broke onto a pass and unleashed a powerful shot that Sanchez managed to save at his near post.
Chelsea relied mainly on counter-attacks and felt they should have been awarded a penalty shortly before the break after Joao Pedro went down under pressure from Abdukodir Khusanov inside the area, but appeals were waved away.
Shortly after the restart, Semenyo missed a good opportunity when he headed over from close range after connecting with a cross from Nico O’Reilly.
Chelsea also came close through Moises Caicedo, whose header was cleared off the line by Rodri after City goalkeeper James Trafford failed to deal properly with a corner kick.
However, City eventually found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute.
Haaland made a clever run down the right side of the penalty area before cutting the ball back for Semenyo, who improvised brilliantly to score the winning goal.
For Chelsea, the defeat added to an already disappointing campaign.
The London club remains without a win in seven league matches and sits ninth on the table with slim hopes of securing Champions League qualification.
Under interim manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea produced a determined display but lacked the attacking edge needed to trouble City consistently.
The loss also came amid growing frustration among supporters, with fans protesting against the club’s owners, BlueCo, before kickoff and chanting demands for change during the final.
