Obidient movement warns politicians ahead of 2027 polls

The Obidient Movement, a political support group previously aligned with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has warned that some politicians risk losing its backing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group said it would no longer offer automatic support to any candidate or political party, stressing that its backing would now depend strictly on competence, credibility and performance.
The Coordinator of the movement in Anambra State, Ikenna Azomchine, made this known in Awka on Sunday while addressing journalists alongside other leaders of the group.
Azomchine, popularly known as “Obidient General,” said the movement had reviewed the conduct of individuals who benefited from its influence during the 2023 general elections and expressed disappointment with their performance in office.
He specifically alleged that some politicians who rode on the popularity of the movement to secure electoral victories had failed to remain accountable to the people who supported them.
“We have assessed all those who rode on the back of the Obidient Movement to win election in 2023, and you can only score them 50 per cent,” he said.
He added that many of those elected to the National Assembly had failed to maintain close contact with their constituents or provide meaningful representation.
According to him, the movement would begin demanding scorecards from elected officials who benefited from its support during the last election cycle.
“It is unfortunate that those that the tsunami took to the National Assembly forgot the base at which they rose.
”We are telling them today that they must come back and give us their scorecards, because we will be there to ask them questions,” he said.
Azomchine also clarified that the movement was not tied to any political party, insisting that it would mobilise support across party lines based on candidates’ integrity and capacity to deliver.
“We are not interested in party politics right now.
”Let political parties present their candidates based on competence and credibility. We will mobilise to determine who wins and who loses in 2027,” he added.
He further stated that the group would scrutinise all candidates in the coming election cycle and support only those who align with its ideals of good governance and accountability.
