Ooni opens up on years of childbirth pressure

The Ooni of Ife, Ooni of Ife, has revealed that he endured years of emotional pain, public criticism, and pressure over the delay in having children after ascending the throne.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Ile-Ife by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, Oba Ogunwusi said he was openly mocked by some people during the difficult period.

According to the statement, the monarch spoke while receiving visitors who came to celebrate the birth of twin princes by one of his wives, Queen Mariam.

“I thank God today. There is nothing God cannot do,” the Ooni said, expressing joy over the new addition to the royal family.

The traditional ruler said he never imagined marrying many wives as a child, adding that circumstances and traditional expectations of the throne changed his marital journey.

Oba Ogunwusi explained that life as the Ooni came with unexpected challenges and pressures, especially concerning royal duties and family expectations.

He recalled facing intense pressure shortly after becoming king to quickly settle into royal marital responsibilities.

The monarch also said efforts were made to convince his former wife to relocate to Ile-Ife, with interventions from prominent traditional rulers and influential personalities, but the efforts did not succeed.

Reflecting on his early life, the Ooni disclosed that he became a father at 19, describing it as one of the most difficult periods of his life.

He said the experience initially overwhelmed him, but credited his mother for encouraging him to stay focused, work hard, and remain determined.

Oba Ogunwusi also appreciated the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her support over the years, describing her as a mother figure who stood by him during difficult moments.

The monarch thanked the visitors for their prayers and support, adding that the mother of the twins also sent greetings to well-wishers.

Earlier, the Chief Imam of Ifeland, Alhaji Abdulsemiu Abdulhammed, said the Muslim community joined in celebrating the Ooni over the blessing.

“We have come to rejoice with Kabiyesi. It is God who makes a person laugh,” he said.

“God created everything, and childbirth comes only by His command. Kabiyesi, this is worthy of thanksgiving.”
