NAFDAC clears BON bread maker after probe into shelf-life allegation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has exonerated Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, producers of BON Bread, following investigations sparked by public concerns over claims that the product remained unspoiled for an unusually long period.
In a statement dated May 17, 2026, the regulatory body said its findings confirmed full compliance with food safety standards after conducting both laboratory testing and on-site inspections of the company’s operations.
The inquiry was triggered by a viral social media post on April 13, 2026, which alleged that a loaf of bread had remained without visible mould growth for over two months, raising questions about its composition and preservation methods.
Although the original post did not specify the brand, the manufacturer later identified the product as BON Bread and rejected the claim as inaccurate, prompting further public attention.
NAFDAC said it responded immediately by initiating a scientific review to verify the authenticity of the concerns raised.
As part of the investigation, officials inspected the company’s bakery facility located in Abuja and collected samples from both production sites and retail outlets across the market for detailed laboratory analysis.
According to the agency, results confirmed the presence of calcium propionate, a food-grade preservative approved for use in bread production, with levels falling within internationally accepted safety thresholds established under the Codex Alimentarius framework.
The agency also disclosed that comprehensive laboratory tests detected no harmful or banned substances in any of the samples examined, including bromate and artificial sweeteners not permitted in bread production.
NAFDAC further noted that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited has maintained consistent regulatory compliance since it began operations in 2006, including successful licence renewals and no record of sanctions or product recalls.
Based on the outcome of its assessment, the agency stated that the company is not in violation of any food safety regulations and assured members of the public that BON Bread remains safe for consumption when produced under approved conditions.
It urged Nigerians to continue reporting suspected food safety issues through its official communication channels to enable prompt investigation and regulatory response.
