Police rescue 2 women from mob attack in A’Ibom

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have rescued two women from a violent mob attack in Uyo, preventing what authorities described as an attempted case of jungle justice.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the victims were assaulted and stripped by an angry crowd before police intervention.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at about 9:45 a.m. along Ring Road 3 in the Uyo metropolis.
The police said the command received a distress call from a commissioner in the state who witnessed the attack while heading to work and immediately intervened to save the victims.
“Upon receipt of the distress call, operatives of the command swiftly mobilised to the scene, dispersed the violent crowd, rescued the victims from imminent danger and rushed them to a medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment,” the statement read.
The police added that one suspect was arrested at the scene for allegedly inciting the mob and calling for the execution of the victims during the attack.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered a full-scale investigation and directed operatives to track down all individuals involved.
The command warned that anyone found culpable including instigators and collaborators would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
It also cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that acts of jungle justice undermine public safety and would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
