U.S. deploys extra 5,000 troops to Poland

United States President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 American troops to Poland, just days after the Pentagon suspended a previously planned movement of 4,000 personnel to the country.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump linked the decision to his administration’s ties with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he openly supported during Poland’s presidential election last year.

However, he did not clarify whether the newly announced troops were part of the earlier suspended deployment or a separate military arrangement.

The move comes amid signals from Washington that the United States may reduce its overall military footprint in Europe as part of Trump’s “America First” foreign policy approach.

Earlier in the month, the administration also confirmed plans to withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany following diplomatic tensions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran conflict.

Trump has repeatedly accused NATO allies of failing to contribute adequately to US-led security efforts, particularly in relation to broader geopolitical tensions linked to Iran and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign ministers from NATO member states are expected to meet in Sweden on Friday for talks that will include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with discussions likely to focus on burden-sharing within the alliance.

Ahead of the meeting, Rubio indicated that troop deployments and allied contributions would be part of the agenda, noting that Trump remains dissatisfied with certain NATO partners.

The U.S. administration has not confirmed whether the new troops bound for Poland will be redeployed from existing units in Germany or drawn from separate military forces.

U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier described the cancelled Poland deployment as a “temporary delay,” insisting that Washington remains committed to a strong military presence in the country.

Poland has become one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe, with President Karol Nawrocki previously describing the US leader as the only global figure capable of resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine.
