Lagos seals 239 sites in environmental drive

The Lagos State Government says it has arrested 931 persons, inspected 2,251 facilities, issued 1,711 contravention notices, and sealed 239 premises as part of intensified environmental enforcement operations across the state.
The disclosure was made by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa in Ikeja.
According to him, the state strengthened its Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) operations over the past year to ensure stricter adherence to environmental laws and sanitation standards.
“Through the monitoring and enforcement drive of the agency, 931 persons were apprehended for waste management offences, 2,251 sites were inspected, 1,711 contravention notices were issued, and 239 sites were sealed,” Wahab said.
He explained that enforcement teams also evacuated more than 650 tonnes of construction waste while sustaining public awareness campaigns on construction, demolition, and disaster waste management in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
“The agency evacuated 650+ tonnes of construction waste and sustained awareness on construction, demolition and disaster waste through stakeholder engagement in collaboration with waste care solutions,” he added.
Wahab also noted that the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency intensified air quality monitoring efforts with the installation of modern sensors across the state.
According to him, 114 air quality monitoring systems were installed, alongside the rehabilitation of air pollution abatement facilities to improve environmental safety.
“The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency on its part successfully completed 114 installations of air quality sensors and the rehabilitation of air pollution abatement facilities across the state,” he said.
He further stated that the initiative is aimed at improving air quality management, reducing pollution, and safeguarding public health across Lagos.
In addition, cleaner fish processing technology was introduced at Ago Egun in Makoko through improved fish kilns designed to reduce smoke emissions and enhance working conditions for local processors.
Wahab stressed that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to environmental enforcement, modern technology deployment, and sustained sanitation campaigns to ensure a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
