Presidency Criticises Backlash Over Adelabu Family Rescue

The Presidency on Sunday criticised individuals questioning the swift rescue of Olaide Adegoke, sister of the immediate past Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her 11-year-old twin sons after their abduction in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Adegoke and her two children were kidnapped on June 3, 2026, before being rescued by security operatives on June 6, 2026.

The operation has since sparked debate on social media, with some Nigerians comparing the speed of the rescue to other unresolved abduction cases in the state.

Some commentators questioned why the operation was concluded within days while schoolchildren and teachers abducted in another incident in Oyo State last month remain in captivity.

Reacting via a series of posts on his verified X handle, @DOlusegun, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, dismissed the criticism and defended the security operation, saying it undermined the efforts of law enforcement agencies.

He said those who were unhappy about the successful rescue and engaged in conspiracy theories were exhibiting what he described as a dangerous mindset.

“If you find yourself unhappy about the rescue of a woman and her children and jump on every conspiracy to try and downplay the efforts of law enforcement, just know you’re already a terrorist.

“You may not be carrying weapons yet, but your mindset and theirs are essentially the same,” he wrote.

The presidential aide also accused some critics of politicising the kidnapping incident rather than focusing on the plight of victims and the efforts made to secure their release.

He said some individuals appeared more interested in scoring political points than acknowledging the safe return of abducted citizens.

Olusegun further alleged that certain commentators lacked sympathy for other victims of kidnapping and were instead using the incident to attack the government.

He maintained that such behaviour reflected a lack of compassion and humanity.

In another post, he rejected claims that supporters of the current administration had behaved similarly while in opposition, insisting that political disagreement should not translate into celebrating the misfortune of others.

“Never in our time in opposition did we celebrate gleefully and shamelessly the misfortunes of those who don’t agree with us.

”You lots are soulless, and your justification today for losing your humanity is that some people may have done it years ago,” he wrote.
