Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has extended congratulations to Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day, expressing optimism that the country’s democratic journey will ultimately lead to greater prosperity and development for citizens.
In a statement released on Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commended Nigerians for their steadfast commitment to democratic values and constitutional governance, despite prevailing national challenges.
He described June 12 as a historic milestone that reflects the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians in their long struggle for democratic rule. According to him, the sacrifices made by past heroes and pro-democracy activists must never be forgotten.
Oborevwori noted that Democracy Day offers an important opportunity for reflection on the nation’s progress, the strengthening of democratic institutions, and the shared responsibility of both leaders and citizens in building a more united and prosperous country.
He further stated that democracy remains the most effective system of government, as it guarantees citizens’ participation in governance while promoting accountability, transparency and adherence to the rule of law.
The governor urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and leadership at all levels, while embracing peace, tolerance and national unity as key foundations for sustainable development.
He also expressed confidence in the country’s future, saying ongoing reforms and the commitment of leaders across the federation would eventually produce positive outcomes for the populace.
“On this Democracy Day, I congratulate all Nigerians and commend their steadfast belief in democratic governance. We must remain hopeful and united as a nation.
”With collective effort, patriotism and commitment to national development, greater days are certainly ahead for our country,” he said.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s determination to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Delta State through people-oriented policies, infrastructure development, and programmes under the MORE Agenda, designed to improve the welfare and living standards of residents.
He also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding and continue to support government initiatives aimed at promoting growth, peace and sustainable development across both the state and the nation.
