Budimir Strike Sends Croatia Past Panama

Croatia strengthened their World Cup knockout hopes with a narrow 1–0 win over Panama in Toronto, a result that secured their first Group L points and ended Panama’s tournament run.

Substitute Ante Budimir scored the only goal nine minutes after halftime, finishing calmly from Josip Stanišić’s low cross.

The breakthrough came shortly after Croatia made attacking changes at the break following a slow first-half display.

Croatia Stay in Qualification Race
The victory keeps Croatia firmly in contention for a place in the round of 32.

A win against Ghana on Saturday would guarantee qualification.

Ghana had earlier drawn 0–0 with England, leaving Group L tightly contested heading into the final matches.

Panama Threaten but Fall Short
Panama created several chances and troubled Croatia with their pace, particularly in the first half.

However, goalkeeper Dominik Livaković produced key saves after the restart to protect Croatia’s lead.

The Croatian defence held firm under pressure as Panama pushed for an equaliser.

The match also marked a milestone for captain Luka Modrić, who made his 200th international appearance.

The 40-year-old midfielder, featuring in his fifth World Cup, completed 88 percent of his passes before being substituted in the 81st minute.

Dalic Praises Veteran Captain
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić praised Modrić’s continued influence on the team.

He said the veteran midfielder remains crucial despite his age and experience.
Modrić’s leadership was highlighted as a key factor in Croatia’s victory.
