Turkey End World Cup Campaign With Late Win Over USA

Turkey closed out their World Cup campaign on a high note on Thursday, edging the United States 3–2 in a dramatic encounter decided by a stoppage-time winner from Kaan Ayhan in Los Angeles.
Although the result had no impact on Group D standings, it ensured Turkey left the tournament with their only victory, while the United States had already secured top spot and qualification to the Round of 32.
The Americans got off to a fast start, taking the lead in the third minute when defender Auston Trusty headed in from a set piece, continuing their pattern of early goals in recent matches.
Turkey, however, responded strongly and grew into the game, creating several attacking threats and testing the U.S. defence throughout an intense and open contest.
A major highlight for the home fans came in the 58th minute when captain Christian Pulisic returned to action after recovering from a calf injury sustained in the opening match against Paraguay.
His introduction lifted the atmosphere as he contributed to several key moments in midfield.
The match swung late in the second half when Auston Trusty was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury, leaving the United States temporarily unsettled.
Turkey capitalised in the closing moments, with substitute Kaan Ayhan scoring virtually with the last kick of the game to seal a dramatic 3–2 victory and silence the home crowd.
Speaking after the match, Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella praised his players’ resilience, saying they showed “skill, ability and character” and could leave the tournament with pride despite their early exit.
