Croatia Edge Ghana to Seal Knockout Berth

Croatia secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after Nikola Vlasic’s late winner earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in a gripping Group L encounter in Philadelphia.
Needing only a draw to guarantee qualification, Zlatko Dalic’s side went one better by claiming all three points to finish second in the group behind England.
The victory also ended Scotland’s hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds, while Ghana advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams despite the defeat.
Croatia started the match confidently, dominating possession and creating the better chances against a Ghanaian side that had already secured qualification before kickoff.
Their bright opening was rewarded in the 31st minute when Petar Sucic opened the scoring with a composed finish.
The midfielder latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Mateo Kovacic before driving a low shot beyond the goalkeeper into the bottom corner to hand Croatia a deserved lead.
Although Ghana struggled to impose themselves during the opening half, the Black Stars emerged from the break with renewed purpose, pressing higher up the pitch and asking more questions of the Croatian defence.
Their improved performance eventually paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen rose highest to head home Ernest Nuamah’s inviting cross.
The celebrations were briefly delayed as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the goal over concerns that Kwasi Sibo, who was standing in an offside position, may have interfered with play.
After a lengthy review, the referee ruled that Sibo had not obstructed the goalkeeper or affected the outcome of the move, allowing the goal to stand and bringing Ghana level at 1-1.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Ghana looked the more dangerous side during the closing stages and came close to taking the lead as Croatia struggled to contain their attacking pressure.
However, Croatia nearly regained the advantage when Mario Pasalic unleashed a powerful effort that forced Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare into an outstanding save, keeping the scores level and setting up a dramatic finish.
With just seven minutes remaining, Croatia found the breakthrough that secured qualification.
Veteran captain Luka Modric delivered a perfectly floated corner into the penalty area, where Nikola Vlasic timed his run brilliantly to power a header beyond Asare and restore Croatia’s lead.
The decisive goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the Croatian players and supporters, who knew victory would guarantee safe passage into the knockout rounds.
The final whistle confirmed Croatia’s second victory of the group stage and secured a runners-up finish in Group L behind England.
Ghana, despite suffering defeat, also progressed after earning one of the qualification spots reserved for the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Croatia will now head into the Round of 32 with renewed confidence after surviving a stern test from the Black Stars, while Ghana will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for another opportunity to extend their World Cup campaign.
