Belgium Stun Senegal With Dramatic Late World Cup Comeback

Belgium produced one of the most remarkable comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time, with Youri Tielemans scoring a dramatic 125th-minute penalty to seal a place in the Round of 16.

The thrilling knockout clash at Seattle Stadium looked destined to become another memorable chapter in Senegal’s football history after the Lions of Teranga stormed into a commanding 2-0 lead through first-half striker Habib Diarra and second-half star Ismaila Sarr.

With just minutes remaining and elimination staring Belgium in the face, the European side mounted an incredible fightback.

Veteran striker Romelu Lukaku ignited hopes in the 86th minute by finishing from Thomas Meunier’s cross before Tielemans headed home an equaliser three minutes later after a goalkeeping error by Mory Diaw forced the contest into extra time.

As the match appeared headed for a penalty shootout, Belgium found one final opportunity deep into stoppage time.

Tielemans was brought down inside the penalty area, and following a VAR review, the referee awarded a spot-kick.

The Aston Villa midfielder calmly converted from 12 yards in the 125th minute, completing an astonishing comeback and recording the latest winning goal in FIFA World Cup history.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia praised his team’s determination, insisting his players never stopped believing despite trailing by two goals.

“In football, anything is possible as long as you keep believing,” Garcia said after the dramatic victory.

The defeat was heartbreaking for Senegal, who were on the verge of recording their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match since making history during their debut appearance in 2002.

A visibly disappointed Senegal coach Pape Thiaw applauded his players’ fighting spirit but admitted they were devastated after failing to protect their lead.

“We gave everything, but unfortunately we couldn’t hold on. It is a painful result for everyone,” he said.

Belgium’s victory also keeps alive the international careers of several experienced stars, including Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, whose World Cup journey appeared to be nearing an abrupt end before the late turnaround.

Senegal had started brightly, with Ismaila Sarr striking the post before Habib Diarra reacted quickest to score from the rebound after another effort bounced off the woodwork.

Early in the second half, Sarr doubled the advantage with a composed finish after controlling a long pass behind Belgium’s defence.

However, Belgium’s substitutions changed the game completely.

Lukaku’s introduction provided greater attacking presence, while Tielemans delivered when it mattered most, first with the equalising header before holding his nerve to convert the decisive penalty.

Belgium will now face co-hosts the United States in the Round of 16 next Tuesday, while Senegal exit the tournament after a courageous performance that ultimately ended in heartbreak.
