Kane Brace Sends England Into Last 16

Captain Harry Kane scored twice in the closing stages as England came from behind to defeat a spirited Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 and book a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel’s side survived a major upset in Atlanta after Brian Cipenga stunned the Three Lions with an early goal that put the African side on course for a famous victory.

England struggled for long periods against a disciplined Congolese defence and needed a late rally to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

After relentless pressure, Kane finally restored parity in the 75th minute, heading home from Anthony Gordon’s cross to ignite England’s comeback.

The England captain completed the turnaround four minutes from time, rifling a powerful shot into the roof of the net after another assist from Gordon to seal a dramatic victory.

The brace took Kane’s tally to five goals at the tournament and 13 World Cup goals overall, further extending his record as England’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.

Despite the defeat, DR Congo earned widespread praise for an impressive campaign on their first World Cup appearance in 52 years.

The Leopards, who had never previously scored or earned a point at the tournament, pushed one of the favourites to the brink of elimination before bowing out.

England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16, but Tuchel’s men are expected to improve significantly after an unconvincing performance that exposed defensive frailties and nearly resulted in one of the biggest shocks of the tournament.
