Army chief calls for tech-driven security strategy

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for a technology-driven and people-centred approach to tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, urging the Nigerian Army to embrace innovation, professionalism and stronger inter-agency collaboration.

Speaking at the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 Lecture and Award Ceremony in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Shaibu said the changing nature of threats requires adaptive strategies and the deployment of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial systems and data analytics.

He noted that Nigeria’s security environment has become increasingly complex, with insurgency, terrorism, banditry, cyber warfare, transnational crime and resource-based conflicts posing major challenges across the country.

The Army Chief also pointed to instability in the Lake Chad Basin, the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea, as well as emerging global trends in cyber operations and AI-driven warfare, as factors shaping national security dynamics.

According to him, the Nigerian Army has responded through enhanced intelligence gathering, joint operations with other security agencies, and increased investment in technology, training and capacity building.

Shaibu said the Army is also strengthening both kinetic and non-kinetic operations to disrupt criminal networks, restore peace and rebuild public confidence in affected communities.

He stressed that the military is increasingly adopting a people-centred approach, with greater emphasis on civilian protection, human rights and improved civil-military relations, including the establishment of human rights desks.

The COAS added that future operations will rely more on emerging technologies and stronger partnerships with regional and international allies, as well as the private sector, to address cross-border threats.

Reaffirming his “Soldier First” philosophy, Shaibu said the welfare, motivation and ethical conduct of troops remain central to the Army’s effectiveness in defending national sovereignty.

He commended the resilience of military personnel and appreciated stakeholders and Nigerians for their continued support, while noting that the event featured awards, exhibitions and interactive sessions.
