NPC begins full digital birth, death registration

The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced the full digital registration of births and deaths across Nigeria under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system, marking a major shift from the traditional paper-based process.
NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, announced the development during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, describing the initiative as a major milestone in modernising Nigeria’s civil registration system.
The new digital platform, known as VitalReg, is designed to improve access to registration services, strengthen data accuracy, enhance security, and provide reliable demographic information for national planning and development.
Yusuf said the digital system would help address longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s civil registration process by making it easier for citizens to register vital events and obtain official records.
He noted that accurate birth and death records are essential for effective governance, identity management, social planning, and delivery of public services.
The NPC chairman said the fully electronic system would also reduce delays, minimise paperwork, improve verification processes, and strengthen the integrity of national records.
He stressed that a reliable civil registration system is central to ensuring that Nigerians have legal identity documents and that government policies are based on accurate population data.
The commission said the platform is now operational nationwide, covering the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as part of efforts to expand access to civil registration services.
The move aligned with broader reforms by the NPC to use technology in improving demographic data management and strengthening Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure.
The digital transformation of civil registration is expected to support government planning, improve service delivery, and provide a more efficient system for documenting major life events across the country.
