Obi woos global partners for Nigeria’s future

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to building a prosperous and globally competitive Nigeria during a high-level roundtable discussion organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin, Germany.

The event, titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” focused on Nigeria’s democratic future, economic development, international relations and ways of strengthening partnerships that can deliver improved living standards for citizens.

Obi said the discussion brought together policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, representatives of international organisations and global media practitioners to explore practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges and opportunities.

According to him, participants examined strategies for expanding cooperation between Nigeria and international partners, particularly in supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which he described as critical drivers of job creation, innovation and wealth generation.

The former Anambra State governor said the meeting also addressed issues around strengthening democratic institutions, improving governance, increasing trade and investment, promoting regional stability and creating an environment capable of attracting confidence from citizens and investors.

Obi expressed optimism over the interest shown by international stakeholders in Nigeria’s future, noting that the participation of German government officials, development agencies, business groups, policy organisations, foundations and international institutions demonstrated the country’s strategic importance.

He maintained that Nigeria has the human and natural resources required to achieve sustainable development but requires leadership focused on competence, accountability and compassion.

According to him, national progress depends on prioritising education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law and strong institutions.

Obi reiterated his belief that Nigeria can transition from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one, reduce poverty and strengthen national unity through responsible governance, fiscal discipline and deeper global partnerships.

He thanked the ECFR for hosting the engagement and described the discussions as constructive and valuable in promoting mutual understanding between Nigeria and the international community.

The NDC candidate concluded by reaffirming his message of hope, saying: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
