The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, says President Bola Tinubu’s decision to retain a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2027 election will remain a major issue.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday Kwankwaso, who is running as Peter Obi’s running mate, said he was surprised that the President chose to maintain the same arrangement that sparked controversy during the 2023 election.
Asked whether the same-faith ticket would affect the 2027 race, the former Kano State governor replied, “It has to be.”
“I am even surprised that the President again is presenting the same type of ticket, and I know him; he is always somebody who likes to balance things,” Kwankwaso said.
He added that Tinubu still had time before the substitution deadline to present what he described as a more balanced ticket.
Kwankwaso said his partnership with Peter Obi under the NDC was based on a shared commitment to address Nigeria’s challenges, especially insecurity, economic difficulties, infrastructure decay and education.
“Our main concern today is the security in the country,” he said, warning that insecurity had spread from the North-East and North-West to other parts of the country.
The former Kano governor also dismissed claims that Obi lacks support in northern Nigeria, saying the NDC presidential candidate has demonstrated political strength across the region.
