Malawi’s women’s national team, the Scorchers, produced one of the biggest surprises in African women’s football after defeating defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the opening stages of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The victory marked a historic moment for Malawi, who were making their debut appearance in the competition and were widely considered underdogs against a Nigerian side that has dominated African women’s football for decades.
Despite controlling much of the game, Nigeria struggled to turn their possession into goals at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
The Super Falcons created several opportunities but were unable to break through.
Malawi, however, made their chances count when it mattered most.
Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring in the 69th minute, sending shockwaves through the stadium. Her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the advantage as the debutants moved into a stunning 2-0 lead against the reigning champions.
Nigeria attempted a late comeback after Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty in the 91st minute, giving the Falcons hope of rescuing a point. But Malawi refused to surrender, with Temwa Chawinga scoring again deep into stoppage time to restore their two-goal cushion.
Uchenna Kanu added another late goal for Nigeria, but it was too little too late as Malawi held on for a famous 3-2 victory.
The result will be remembered as a landmark achievement for the Scorchers, who became the first debutants to defeat the defending champions in WAFCON history.
For Nigeria, the defeat serves as an early warning in their title defence.
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to their next match against Zambia, who began their campaign with a commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt.
With both teams looking to make a statement, the clash promises to be another major test for the ten-time African champions.
