Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Deltas has called for visionary, competent and selfless leadership as the foundation for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that institutions can only succeed when driven by people of integrity, patriotism and character.
The governor made the call on Thursday during the inaugural Professor Sam Oyovbaire Public Service Lecture at Southern Delta University, Orerokpe Campus, where he honoured the celebrated political scientist and former Minister of Information for his lifelong contributions to scholarship, governance and national development.
Represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Oborevwori described the establishment of the annual lecture as a deserving tribute to Professor Oyovbaire’s enduring legacy in academia and public service.
“I congratulate Southern Delta University for instituting this lecture series to celebrate a man whose scholarship and public service have enriched our democratic journey,” the governor said.
He praised Oyovbaire’s intellectual achievements and commitment to nation-building, noting that his works have shaped national conversations on democracy, governance and federalism while mentoring generations of scholars and public servants.
Speaking on the lecture theme, “Federal Statecraft without Crafters: The Nigerian Predicament,” Oborevwori described it as a timely reflection on Nigeria’s leadership challenges, stressing that no democratic system can thrive without capable leaders dedicated to the collective interest of the people.
“Strong institutions are important, but they can only flourish when guided by men and women of character, competence and patriotism,” he stated.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance through the ‘MORE Agenda’, saying prudent management of resources, inclusive policies and effective collaboration remain key to sustainable development and improved living standards for Deltans.
He also urged participants to ensure that ideas generated from the lecture translate into practical solutions that would strengthen democratic institutions and promote national development.
Oborevwori congratulated Professor Oyovbaire on the recognition and commended Southern Delta University for creating a platform that would encourage intellectual engagement and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic growth.
The event attracted members of the Delta State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, Vice Chancellor of Southern Delta University, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, senior government officials, academics, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other distinguished guests.
