A suspected terrorist logistics courier has been arrested in Cameroon’s Far North Region after a patrol operation uncovered about 21,000 rounds of ammunition allegedly being transported to terrorist elements operating around the Lake Chad Basin.
The arrest was carried out on August 10 by personnel of the National Gendarmerie stationed at Hilé-Alifa, under Sector 1 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Moussa Goudja, was reportedly intercepted in the Dougoum Silio area of Logone.
According to the MNJTF, Goudja was carrying three containers disguised as vessels used for transporting petroleum products. Investigators found the ammunition concealed inside the containers.
The recovered ammunition was identified as approximately 21,000 rounds of 7.62 × 39mm ammunition.
Acting Chief Military Public Information Officer of the MNJTF, Lieutenant Colonel Iweha Ikedichi-Onyenonachi, said preliminary findings indicated that the suspect was moving the ammunition to Ambdego for onward delivery.
He was intercepted before completing the journey and handed over to a national security agency, where he remains in custody as investigations continue.
The scale of the seizure has raised the significance of the operation, as the recovered ammunition could have supplied terrorist groups operating across the Lake Chad Basin.
MNJTF Force Commander, Major General S T Audu, commended the Cameroonian security forces involved in the operation.
“This successful operation… has disrupted an attempt to transport a significant quantity of ammunition to terrorist elements operating within the Lake Chad Basin area.”
Beyond the arrest, the operation highlights the growing focus of regional security forces on the logistics networks that sustain terrorist groups.
The MNJTF said it would continue intelligence-led operations and deepen cooperation with national security agencies to identify and disrupt the movement of weapons and other supplies.
The Force Commander also directed sectors of the task force to intensify patrols and clearance operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks across the region.
The latest seizure comes as security forces continue efforts to prevent weapons and ammunition from reaching armed groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin, where cross-border cooperation remains central to counterterrorism operations.
The arrest of the alleged courier and recovery of the ammunition therefore represent not only a significant seizure but also a disruption of a suspected supply chain before the consignment reached its intended destination.
