Bauchi Polytechnic shut down indefinitely after protest over robbery

The Federal Polytechnic in Bauchi has been shut down indefinitely after a violent protest broke out over a robbery attack on the school’s male students’ hostel.
The incident occurred around 2 am on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, when armed robbers invaded the hostel, injuring several students and carting away valuables, including laptops, mobile phones, and cash.
This resulted to the protest which started at about 5:30 am, with students marching against insecurity on the polytechnic campus.
The situation escalated when suspected hoodlums joined the demonstration, vandalising school property and blocking the Bauchi-Dass road near the institution’s main gate.
Police officers fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, prompting some students to hurl stones before security operatives regained control.
In a statement, the management of the polytechnic condemned the violence that erupted from the demonstration, describing the students’ frustration as “justifiable” but criticising the involvement of hoodlums.
The school authorities ordered the immediate closure of the campus, giving students two hours to vacate the premises until further notice.
The statement reads in part: “It has been established that hoodlums who do not mean the students and the institution well have taken over what was meant to be a peaceful protest.
“Against the background of this ugly situation, the management hereby orders the immediate closure of academic activities.
”By this order, students are given two hours within which to vacate the polytechnic campus until further notice,” it added.
The Bauchi State Police Command arrested 48 students for their alleged involvement in the violence and three suspected armed robbers in connection with the hostel robbery.
The police Spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, said the command would release a detailed statement after gathering necessary fact.
