The Nigerian government has withdrawn the criminal complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, who was involved in an incident on an Ibom Airline flight on August 10, 2025.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, SAN, disclosed that the decision was made after consulting with key stakeholders in the aviation sector and reviewing recent incidents involving unruly passengers and airline staff.
The Nigerian government has announced the withdrawal of the criminal complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson following an incident on an Ibom Airline flight on Sunday, 10 August 2025.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Keyamo, SAN, said he had consulted with critical stakeholders in the aviation sector and reviewed the incidents involving unruly passengers and airline staff in recent weeks.
He also said, “Valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocol have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation space.”
On the Ibom Airline case, Keyamo confirmed that following her statement to the police in the presence of her lawyer, Ms. Emmanson “exhibited great remorse for her conduct.”
He further said that the police and prosecuting authorities would facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within the week.
Keyamo also announced that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) had agreed to lift the lifetime flying ban imposed on her, with full details of the resolution to be released by AON subsequently.
The decision followed a review of other high-profile aviation incidents, including that of music star Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as Kwam 1, who had an encounter with ValueJet.
Keyamo noted that the National Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) would reduce Kwam 1’s flight ban to one month and withdraw its criminal complaints against him, recognising his public demonstration of penitence.
”FAAN will work with Kwam 1 as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward
”In addition, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba of ValueJet will have their licences restored after a one-month period, following mandatory professional re-appraisal, Keyamo said.
The government also directed all relevant aviation agencies, in collaboration with complementary agencies, to hold a retreat next week aimed at retraining and preparing aviation security personnel to manage disruptive passengers and de-escalate potentially explosive situations.
Airlines will hold separate sessions to review staff conduct towards passengers.
Keyamo emphasised that the decisions were made on compassionate grounds, stating: “Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws are involved.”
He added that the actions also sent a “clear message that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously” while drawing a line after these clemencies.
