INEC nominee Amupitan to restore credibility to electoral process – Olowonihi

A retired Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ayo Olowonihi, has expressed confidence in the newly nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan.

According to Olowonihi, Amupitan possesses the courage, integrity, and dedication needed to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process and ensure credible elections.

Speaking in an interview on Arise News, on Thursday, Olowonihi, who has known Amupitan for decades, described him as a man of impeccable values shaped by humble beginnings.

He cited Amupitan’s past actions as evidence of his character, including his willingness to take up Olowonihi’s case during a career setback and pursue it without seeking compensation.

Olowonihi highlighted Amupitan’s key qualities, including unwavering commitment to principles and values, dedication to tireless work ethic and commitment to delivering results, courage and willingness to confront challenges and make tough decisions.

While commending President Bola Tinubu for appointing Amupitan, Olowonihi noted that the INEC chairman’s greatest challenge would be restoring public trust in the electoral commission ahead of the 2027 general elections.

To achieve this, ”Amupitan must remain apolitical, avoid close association with politicians, and focus on building a transparent and efficient electoral system.”

Olowonihi advised Amupitan to
stay focused by maintaining a steadfast commitment to delivering credible elections.

He also advised Amupitan to listen more and be open to feedback and perspectives from various stakeholders among others

By following these principles, Olowonihi believes Amupitan could; succeed in restoring Nigeria’s electoral process and take the country’s elections to a higher standard.
