Abdulrahman-led PDP unveils new board of trustees, appoints Ohuabunwa as chairman

The sectional acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulrahman Mohammed, on Friday inaugurated a new Board of Trustees (BoT) for the party, naming Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as chairman and Isah Dansidi as secretary.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the official residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja, drawing key party stakeholders and loyalists seeking to reposition the opposition party ahead of future elections.

Speaking during the event, Abdulrahman said the formation of the new board was a deliberate effort to restore the PDP to its founding ideals of justice, equity, inclusiveness, and respect for the rule of law.

“We are not just inaugurating a board today. We are reaffirming our faith in the ideals that birthed this great political family, fairness, unity, and accountability, ” he said.

He noted that internal disputes and leadership struggles had diverted the PDP from its core principles, adding that the recent restructuring was essential to rebuilding public confidence in the party.

According to Abdulrahman, the previous BoT, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, lost its moral footing, prompting necessary reforms.

“The decay we are correcting today did not begin overnight.

“It began when we compromised on zoning before the 2015 elections, when ambition overtook equity, and when we silenced the voices of reason within our ranks.

”The consequences of those missteps still haunt us, ” he added.

The acting chairman vowed that under the new leadership, the PDP would no longer be controlled by impunity or disregard for its own constitution.

“We will rebuild this party on transparency and integrity. Our congresses will be fair, our court judgments respected, and our constitution upheld.

“This is the path back to becoming the moral voice of Nigeria’s democracy, ” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Senator Ohuabunwa promised to work with other board members to revive the PDP’s integrity and ensure strict adherence to the party’s constitution.

He also presented a communiqué outlining the resolutions reached during a closed-door meeting held prior to the inauguration.

One key resolution, he revealed, was the directive for the party to suspend its planned national convention, pending compliance with a Federal High Court ruling.

“While some members have appealed the ruling, the convention must remain on hold until the legal process is fully resolved,” Ohuabunwa stated.

He also instructed all party organs and officials to respect the court’s judgment, warning against any actions that could undermine the ongoing legal process.

The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political force, has been grappling with internal divisions, leadership disputes, and rival factions since its loss of power in 2015.

Friday’s inauguration is seen as part of a broader move by Abdulrahman’s faction to stabilize the party and restore credibility ahead of upcoming elections.
