PDP still strong, Nov 15 convention will proceed — Bode George

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Chief Bode George, says the party remains stable and resilient despite court disputes and internal disagreements ahead of its national convention.

Speaking on on Friday on Politics Today on Channels Television, George described the PDP as “an Iroko” — a political institution he insists remains intact in structure and spirit.

He maintained that the convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan would hold as planned, despite conflicting court rulings.

According to him, a court in Oyo State granted an extension for the party to continue preparations, with a further ruling expected on December 8.

He expressed surprise at former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido’s decision to sue the party.

“I was shocked he went to court,” George said. “No organisation is free of disagreements, but this party is solid and undivided.”

George insisted Lamido’s grievances were unnecessary, explaining that the National Executive Committee (NEC) had set clear dates for collecting and returning nomination forms.

He said all interested aspirants obtained their forms within the approved timeline, except Lamido who appeared on the final day meant for form submission, not collection.

“If he had shown interest earlier, with his status, they would have attended to him.

“But to go to court claiming he wasn’t given the form when the window had closed, was that right?, ” he queried.

Lamido, however, maintained he went to court to restore his rights and dignity. He insists he cannot attend the convention while an injunction is active.

Earlier this week, Lamido said the PDP had deteriorated from a once-united family due to internal erosion and alleged neglect by party governors.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, ordered the PDP to halt the convention until Lamido is able to obtain the nomination form.

In contrast, the Oyo State High Court adjourned ruling on another related case but reaffirmed that preparations for the convention could continue.

The contradictory rulings have intensified the party’s internal crisis, even as governors and top stakeholders insist the gathering must proceed.

Despite legal uncertainties, delegates have already begun arriving in Ibadan. The venue has been decorated in PDP colours, and logistical arrangements are in place for the two-day event.

Party leaders continued to express confidence that the convention would go ahead and that the crisis would not derail the party’s broader political agenda.
