The Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, has received full accreditation for its residency training programmes in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Family Medicine and Dentistry.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr Anthonia Njoku, announced the development during activities marking the facility’s seventh anniversary, crediting the progress to support from Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.
She said the Obstetrics and Gynaecology programme was accredited by both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, enabling the hospital to train more specialist doctors.
Njoku also highlighted the governor’s provision of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) equipment, which she said would expand reproductive healthcare services for couples facing infertility challenges.
“In reproductive healthcare, many couples who find it difficult to have their babies will now receive assistance through the IVF programme,” she said.
The CMD added that the hospital had absorbed 126 contract workers into the state workforce, recruited additional medical personnel, and created more than 290 direct employment opportunities.
She also disclosed that the hospital signed an agreement with Mudiame University, Irrua, to serve as a teaching hospital for medical students and now provides Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care services.
