AFCON bronze pushes Super Eagles up FIFA ladder

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have climbed to 26th place in the latest FIFA World Ranking, reflecting the team’s strong showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The new ranking, released on Monday, represented a 12-place jump from Nigeria’s previous position.

The Super Eagles’ rise followed an impressive AFCON outing in which the team finished third after defeating Egypt in the bronze-medal match.

Nigeria lost only one game throughout the tournament, falling to host nation Morocco on penalties in the semi-finals.

Under head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles were widely praised for their organisation, teamwork, and tactical discipline.

Observers noted improved coordination across all departments of the team.

FIFA data showed that Nigeria gained 79.09 ranking points from the tournament.

The points boost played a major role in lifting the country into the global top 30.

On the African continent, Nigeria now ranks third behind Morocco and Senegal.

Other countries in Africa’s top 10 include Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tunisia, DR Congo, and Mali.

Globally, Spain retained the number one position, followed by Argentina and France.

England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, and Germany complete the top 10.

The Federal Government praised the Super Eagles for their determination and resilience at AFCON.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the team’s performance reflected unity, discipline, and national pride.

The government urged the players and technical crew to draw lessons from the tournament and return stronger in future competitions.
