Fire destroys goods worth millions in Lagos’ computer village

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday has destroyed goods worth millions of naira at a commercial building in Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The blaze, which erupted around 1:55 a.m. on Somoye Osundairo Street, affected a one-storey building housing multiple computer and electronics traders.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the incident prompted an immediate activation of the state’s emergency response plan from its Command and Control Centre in Alausa.

Upon arrival, the LASEMA response team observed “active flames and dense smoke, indicating intense combustion within the structure.”

The agency noted that the high volume of combustible materials in the building contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

While no fatalities were reported, some firefighters sustained minor injuries during operations.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.

“The entire upper floor of the building was completely razed by the fire.

”All goods and properties stored there were destroyed, while the structure itself was partially compromised and requires immediate assessment,” LASEMA said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

The agency detailed that its team conducted a risk assessment, cordoned off the affected area, and coordinated a multi-agency response.

Agencies involved included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, and the Nigeria Police Force, ensuring the fire did not spread to neighboring buildings.

“All goods and properties worth millions of naira stored therein were totally destroyed by the conflagration,” LASEMA added.

“Firefighting operations successfully suppressed and contained the fire within the affected building, preventing escalation to adjoining structures.

”Damping-down operations are ongoing to prevent re-ignition.”

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency continues to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the full scale of the damages.

Traders in Computer Village, one of Lagos’ busiest electronics markets, expressed deep concern over the loss, highlighting the economic setback such disasters impose on small businesses in the city.
