Court adjourns trial of Anthony Joshua’s driver to Feb. 25

A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the tragic accident that killed heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s close associates, to February 25, 2026.
The 46-year-old driver was charged following a fatal accident on December 29, 2025, which claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
During the crash, Kayode and Joshua sustained minor injuries, while the Lexus SUV they were traveling in collided with a stationary truck.
Kayode was arraigned on January 2, 2026, before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun at Sagamu Magistrate’s Court.
He faces a four-count charge under the Federal Highway Act, Cap F: 135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which is applicable in Ogun State.
The charges include: Dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the Act.
Driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and property damage, under Section 7(1) of the Act, driving without a valid national driver’s license, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Act.
During the hearing on January 20, 2026, the prosecution, represented by Nijiwe Richard, requested an adjournment to duplicate the case file to the Office of the Attorney General of Ogun State through the Department of Public Prosecution, seeking further legal advice in the interest of justice.
Initially, Kayode’s counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the adjournment, expressing readiness to proceed with the trial.
However, the magistrate granted the prosecution’s application, officially adjourning the trial to February 25, 2026. Kayode was granted bail of N5,000,000 with two sureties.
The accident sent shockwaves through the international boxing community, as both Ghami and Ayodele were key figures in Joshua’s training camp.
Following the crash, Joshua was hospitalised but later discharged after being deemed clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
The grieving boxer, accompanied by his mother, visited a Lagos funeral home to pay respects to Ayodele and Ghami before their bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom.
The funeral prayer service took place on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
The deaths of Ghami and Ayodele represent a significant loss to Joshua’s team.
Ghami, as his strength and conditioning coach, and Ayodele, his personal trainer, were widely regarded as central to the preparation and wellbeing of the boxing champion.
Their passing has not only affected Joshua personally but also resonated with fans and professional peers around the world.
The adjournment means that the court will resume hearing the case in late February, allowing time for the prosecution to finalise its preparations and receive legal guidance.
The outcome of the trial will be closely watched, given the high-profile nature of the individuals involved and the tragic circumstances surrounding the accident.
