Moroccan court jails AFCON fans …Eighteen Senegal supporters get up to 12 months

A Moroccan court has sentenced 18 Senegalese football supporters to prison terms ranging from three to 12 months over hooliganism.

The convictions stemmed from disturbances during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat.

The fans had remained in pre-trial detention since January 18, the day of the heated final.

Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Prosecutors said some supporters attempted to invade the pitch.
Others were accused of throwing objects onto the field during the match.

The prosecution argued that the group deliberately disrupted proceedings.

It added that the alleged acts were broadcast live on television.
Material damage to the stadium was estimated at more than four million Moroccan dirhams.

Authorities said surveillance footage and medical reports formed part of the evidence.
Defence Disputes Evidence

Defence lawyer Naima El Guellaf argued that the footage did not conclusively identify her clients.

She told the court there was no irrefutable proof any defendant assaulted security personnel.

The lawyer also contended that the supporters should not face double punishment.

In January, the Confederation of African Football sanctioned both national federations.

Fines were imposed on Senegal and Morocco for breaches of fair play during the final.

Lawyer Mustapha Simou, representing injured security officers, disagreed with the defence.

He argued that sporting sanctions do not override criminal responsibility.

The court ultimately handed down custodial sentences, ending weeks of legal uncertainty.

The case has reignited debate over fan conduct and stadium security at major tournaments in Africa.
