IGP moves to dismiss N1bn enforcement suit by El-Rufai

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has requested Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to dismiss a rights enforcement suit filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

El-Rufai is seeking N1 billion in compensation from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Chief Magistrate Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the IGP, and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

The suit challenges a recent search of his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, during which items were allegedly seized.

In a counter-affidavit, the IGP defended the search, stating it was conducted lawfully under a valid court-issued warrant and accusing El-Rufai of using the suit to avoid investigation and potential prosecution.

At Thursday’s hearing on Channels Television, El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Akpan, indicated he had not yet responded to the IGP’s affidavit.

Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the case until March 25, 2026, for further hearing and ordered that notices be served on the second respondent, a Chief Magistrate, and the fourth respondent, the AGF.

This development continues the legal tussle surrounding the search of El-Rufai’s property and his ongoing claims against law enforcement agencies.
