NBC warns broadcasters over ethical breaches

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has cautioned broadcast presenters against presenting personal opinions as factual reporting or engaging in conduct that undermines guests on air, warning that offenders will face disciplinary measures.

In a statement released on Friday, the commission said it had observed a noticeable increase in violations of the sixth edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code across news, current affairs, and political programming.

“The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has identified a sustained increase in breaches of the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code across News, Current Affairs, and Political Programmes,” the statement reads.

“Broadcast platforms are increasingly being deployed in ways that depart from their core obligation to inform the public with accuracy, balance, and professionalism.”

According to the commission, several presenters and programme anchors are increasingly departing from established professional standards by failing to accommodate opposing perspectives and by compromising neutrality during broadcasts.

It stressed that such conduct contravenes the broadcasting code, which requires impartiality and the fair presentation of all sides in matters of public interest.

“Henceforth, any anchor or presenter found to have expressed personal opinion as fact, bullied or intimidated a guest, denied fair hearing to opposing views, or otherwise compromised neutrality, shall be deemed to have committed a Class B breach,” NBC said.

The regulator also raised concern over the rising trend of political actors using broadcast platforms to circulate divisive, inflammatory, and unverified claims.

It also emphasised that broadcasters remain fully responsible for all content aired, including live programmes, and cannot transfer accountability to invited guests or contributors.

Reiterating its regulatory stance, the NBC said it would enforce strict compliance with the broadcasting code, noting that infractions involving hate speech, incitement, or imbalance would attract sanctions.

The commission also urged media organisations to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and fairness, especially as the country moves closer to a sensitive electoral season, warning that the airwaves must not become channels for misinformation.
