FG declares May 1 Workers’ Day holiday

The Federal Government has announced Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The declaration was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the government’s message of appreciation to workers nationwide.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister commended Nigerian workers for their dedication and contributions to national development.

He noted that the commitment and hard work of the workforce remain vital to the country’s growth and prosperity, urging citizens to continue to demonstrate patriotism, productivity, and diligence in their respective roles.

“The Federal Government has declared Friday, 1st May 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers Day,” the statement read.

“The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on behalf of the Federal Government.

He congratulated workers across the country on this year’s celebration.

“The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication to national development.

”He noted that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity, ” the statement added.

Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and enhancing security, while promoting an enabling environment for economic progress.

He encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion not only to celebrate but also to reflect on the importance of unity, discipline, and collective effort in nation-building.

The minister also urged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding throughout the holiday period, while wishing workers a successful and meaningful celebration.
